Dutch Oven: Milo Classic Dutch Oven


1 packet (12 ounces) bacon, cut into ¼" strips

1 sweet onion, diced

4 cans (60 ounces) navy beans, drained and rinsed

⅓ cup (80 ml) blackstrap molasses

¼ cup (50 g) brown sugar, approximately

2 cups (500 ml) hot water, approximately

salt and pepper to taste


Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).

Add the bacon to a cold 5.5 quart Dutch oven and cook over medium heat until bacon is brown and crispy. 

Add the diced onion, beans, molasses, and a few twists of fresh ground black pepper and stir to combine. 

Add 1 cup of hot water and mix well. 

Put the lid on your Dutch oven, and move it to the oven to bake for 90 minutes, stirring every 30 minutes or so until the sauce is thick and glossy and a golden-brown color. 

Remove beans from oven and add hot water as necessary until desired consistency is reached. Stir in the brown sugar and add salt to taste.
